Getting the Rayban sunglasses was a piece of cake

The picnic took many weeks to organize. After discussing the plans for weeks, it took too long to gather the money. The bus had to be hired, and shopping had to be done. At 8000 feet above sea level in the Himalayas, the sun shone down brightly…, particularly at the riverside. Everything looked so bright and white like the sand and the stones amidst the blue-green of the shining, swiftly flowing water. Arvind wished he had sunglasses, but they cost quite a bit. Where would he find so much money? The pocket money that came every month went into the picnic expenses.

Ramesh had all the plans ready. “Listen, guys. My calculations require Rs.400 each. Since there are seven of us, we feel the pinch. I wish we had more girls.”

Arvind arranged for the logs of firewood from the distant forest. His village lay close to the area where restrictions upon collecting branches did not apply. He wished he could have avoided the contribution. If he could, he might have bought a pair of cheap sunglasses. He had seen such stuff in the Sunday market.

Sunaina appeared out of nowhere right in front amidst the sea of vehicles and people at the fair. The local festival was approaching, and everything looked so colorful, and the people were in such high spirits. If only he had those sunglasses… He looked in the mirror in the window of the handicraft store. Looking at his profile again brought back those imagined shortcomings.

“Hey! I called you yesterday, but your phone was switched off. Where are you going?”
“Sorry about that. I was busy collecting firewood. I just put it in Ramesh’s house. Everything is ready for tomorrow. We are planning a great picnic. I heard that you are bringing the music. Will you take a cup of coffee?’

“Sure, thank you. The place is crowded. Let us stand in the queue. I hope Tina will become too”

“She confirmed it. I met her this morning. She will bring some fruit from her orchard. Plenty. I love apples!”

Arvind could not help staring at Sunaina’s exotic sunglasses that seemed to cover half her pretty, fair face. The strange pattern between a square and an oval twisted out of shape. The color, too, appeared dark brown and red with a hint of

Gray. The lenses appeared deep black. He did not want anything as flashy as that, and he preferred green for the lens. It was all a dream anyway… everybody would be wearing goggles like that during the sunny picnic the next day…

He woke early and remembered the picnic. He was out of bed and washing in a jiffy. He almost forgot to carry his phone and the earphones. He liked the FM when he got bored… Hindi and English songs both provided great fantasy.

“Ma, I am getting late. They will be waiting.”

“Enjoy the picnic beta. Be very careful at the riverside. I bought a gift for your birthday.”
It was a fresh pair of Rayban sunglasses, a splendid green lens with a black frame combination that he would inaugurate the same day and treasure for very long.
